The A.N.S.W.E.R Key To Open/Constructed Response

To teach students a routine for answering reading comprehension open response (constructed response) questions.

Open Response questions, also known as Constructed Response, require students to integrate reading comprehension, organization and planning, and writing skills in order to successfully construct an answer that represents their true comprehension ability and skills. The ANSWER Key to Open Response is a routine for students to help answer open response questions that measure reading comprehension on state-wide tests.

The routine is a structured and practical routine that includes these steps:

A: Analyze the Question
N: Note Plan
S: Skim, Read and Select
W: Write the Answer
ER: End by Reviewing

The A.N.S.W.E.R Model is used at Derry Village to answer all constructed response questions whether they are short answer or extended response type questions. We believe that students using this model for responding to both math and reading questions will have a good basis for providing a complete answer.

The model is adapted to meet the needs of the school.

Analyze the Question

  • Look for important words in the question.
  • Box the word if it is a person, place or thing.
  • Underline important words.
  • Circle numbers.

Note Plan

  • Use a graphic organizer e.g. T-Chart, Web, or Venn Diagram (To compare two things)
  • Write a topic sentence that rephrases the question

Skim, Read and Select

  • If there is text you can write on then - underline, circle, highlight - important information.

Write the Answer

  • Using information from graphic organizer (T-chart, web, etc) write a paragraph, beginning with the topic sentence.

End by Reviewing

  • Make sure your writing has correct; capitals, punctuatiuon, grammar, spelling. Change boring words to "gems". Add details (use adjectives).
  • Use a different color to edit.
  • Reread and double check your writing.
