Our class project: Build a Toothpick Bridge

Rules:

Your assignment is to create a bridge using only the following materials:

-one box of toothpicks (round or flat)

    -either mini-marshmallows or gumdrops

    -white glue

The bridge must meet the following specifications:

-The bridge must cross a span of 8 inches. (This means it must be at least 10 inches long.)

-Each marshmallow or gumdrop must attach to a joint where two toothpicks meet.

-You may use glue only at the joints. No soaking toothpicks in glue.

-The bridge must support the weight of at least 5 pounds when placed over the 8 inch span

Click on Building Bridges from Toothpicks. to find out some great information about real bridges and bridges made from toothpicks. You can see some photos of famous bridge designs, learn some structural terms that describe the features of bridges, get ideas for planning and building a toothpick bridge, and even build a virtual toothpick bridge online! There are also some dramatic photos of the 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster.

Here are some pictures of toothpick bridges made by our 4th grade class in 2007!
Many of them successfully held 5 pounds and more!

Here's a very strong bridge from the class of 2005 that passed the test with flying colors.

Too bad about this one!
