Go Green Club - 2010!
The Go Green Club
is in it's second year at the Ernest P. Barka Elementary
School
in Derry, New Hampshire. The idea for the club came from students in
the 4th grade who were interested in raising awareness of environmental
concerns we face on a daily basis.
A meeting was held early last year and was attended by interested staff members, our principal, Mr. LaFleur, a parent volunteer, and student representatives. A committee was formed and our first student club meeting was scheduled. Mr. Withrow, our parent volunteer, discussed plans to build a compost bin out in back of the school to start a program for composting food from student lunches. See our news page for more details.
Activities at the first club meeting included discussion of recycling efforts around the world and in our own town of Derry. Other activities included student art posters to hang up around the school with the theme of recycle, reuse, and reduce. current activities...
The Website
The goal of this website is to share the students' "Green" activities they are working on with our school, our parents, and our community. The website's purpose is to have a written public record of how the students at Barka Elementary School are taking steps to be better citizens of this small green planet we call earth. We hope you will enjoy and learn about our "go green" efforts as we go through the school year. Thank you!
Go Green Facts
Here are some Go Green Tips
that club members have shared with the students on Friday announcements:
- Recycling paper instead of making it from new material generates 74% less air pollution and uses 50% less water!
- Americans throw away enough aluminum every month to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet. Wow!
